SAE 1018 is a low carbon steel grade known for its excellent weldability, machinability, and ductility. It provides a good balance of strength and toughness and is widely used in applications requiring moderate strength and good surface finish. It can also be case-hardened for improved wear resistance while maintaining a tough core.

Chemical Composition (Typical %):

  • Carbon (C): 0.15 – 0.20%

  • Manganese (Mn): 0.60 – 0.90%

  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.040%

  • Sulphur (S): ≤ 0.050%

  • Iron (Fe): Balance

Mechanical Properties (Approximate):

  • Tensile Strength: 440 – 470 MPa

  • Yield Strength: ~370 MPa

  • Hardness (Brinell): 126 – 137 HB

  • Elongation: ~15 – 20%

  • Density: 7.87 g/cm³

Key Properties:

  • Excellent machinability and weldability

  • Good toughness and ductility

  • Can be case hardened for wear resistance

  • Smooth surface finish suitable for bright bar applications

Heat Treatment:

  • Carburizing Temperature: 880 – 920°C

  • Hardening Temperature: 780 – 830°C (Water or oil quench)

  • Tempering Temperature: 150 – 200°C

Applications:

  • Shafts and axles

  • Pins, studs, and spindles

  • Machine parts and fasteners

  • Case-hardened components

  • Bright bars and cold-drawn products

SAE 1141 is a medium carbon, manganese steel with added sulphur to improve machinability. It is categorized as a free-machining steel, making it ideal for producing precision components with high-speed machining operations. This grade offers a good balance of strength, hardness, and machinability, and can be heat-treated for additional strength and wear resistance.

Chemical Composition (Typical %):

  • Carbon (C): 0.37 – 0.45%

  • Manganese (Mn): 1.35 – 1.65%

  • Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.040%

  • Sulphur (S): 0.08 – 0.13%

  • Iron (Fe): Balance

Mechanical Properties (Approximate):

  • Tensile Strength: 620 – 760 MPa

  • Yield Strength: ~415 MPa

  • Hardness (Brinell): 170 – 220 HB (annealed)

  • Elongation: 20%

  • Density: 7.85 g/cm³

Key Features:

  • Excellent machinability due to higher sulphur content

  • Good strength and toughness

  • Can be hardened and tempered

  • Suitable for repetitive machining and production runs

  • Not recommended for welding due to sulphur content

Heat Treatment:

  • Annealing: 845°C, slow furnace cooling

  • Normalizing: 870 – 900°C, air cool

  • Hardening: 830 – 860°C, oil quench

  • Tempering: 425 – 650°C (depending on desired hardness)

Applications:

  • Shafts and axles

  • Studs, bolts, and pins

  • Machined components and fittings

  • Automotive parts and fasteners

  • Gears and couplings
