SAE 1018 is a low carbon steel grade known for its excellent weldability, machinability, and ductility. It provides a good balance of strength and toughness and is widely used in applications requiring moderate strength and good surface finish. It can also be case-hardened for improved wear resistance while maintaining a tough core.

SAE 1141 is a medium carbon, manganese steel with added sulphur to improve machinability. It is categorized as a free-machining steel, making it ideal for producing precision components with high-speed machining operations. This grade offers a good balance of strength, hardness, and machinability, and can be heat-treated for additional strength and wear resistance.

Sulphur (S): 0.08 – 0.13%

Key Features:

Annealing: 845°C, slow furnace cooling
Normalizing: 870 – 900°C, air cool
Hardening: 830 – 860°C, oil quench
Tempering: 425 – 650°C (depending on desired hardness)
