SAE 1141 is a medium carbon, manganese steel with added sulphur to improve machinability. It is categorized as a free-machining steel, making it ideal for producing precision components with high-speed machining operations. This grade offers a good balance of strength, hardness, and machinability, and can be heat-treated for additional strength and wear resistance.
Chemical Composition (Typical %):
Carbon (C): 0.37 – 0.45%
Manganese (Mn): 1.35 – 1.65%
Phosphorus (P): ≤ 0.040%
Sulphur (S): 0.08 – 0.13%
Iron (Fe): Balance
Mechanical Properties (Approximate):
Tensile Strength: 620 – 760 MPa
Yield Strength: ~415 MPa
Hardness (Brinell): 170 – 220 HB (annealed)
Elongation: 20%
Density: 7.85 g/cm³
Key Features:
Excellent machinability due to higher sulphur content
Good strength and toughness
Can be hardened and tempered
Suitable for repetitive machining and production runs
Not recommended for welding due to sulphur content
Heat Treatment:
Annealing: 845°C, slow furnace cooling
Normalizing: 870 – 900°C, air cool
Hardening: 830 – 860°C, oil quench
